Cognitive Biases:

What are cognitive biases?

These are systematic errors or a ‘mental shortcut’ we utilise to influence our thinking, the way we perceive others and the decision-making process.  This may lead to irrational thoughts or judgments that are often based on perception or other beliefs.

The book talks of several psychological biases that affect us and the way we may think:

  • Confirmation- The bias that essentially ‘confirm’ our views. This occurs in instances where we consume the information that validates the views we hold.

  • Projection- This bias affects the world we see. As senses and psyche overlays our world view, projecting our desires changes the way we interpret the world.

  • Extrapolation- This affects the way assume things to be just the same throughout time.

  • Anchoring-This bias affects when we are impacted by the initial information received.

Why should teachers read the book?

  • The book helps one understand the world around you and provides advice on topics such as worry, anxiety and purpose.

  • It provides insights on topics such as relationships, creating habits and how to recognise your own cognitive biases
