Tips To Handle Board Exams

As students enter their ‘board exam’ year, they begin a very crucial time as they are faced with the challenge on how to effectively spend their study hours to prepare well. Students need to adopt certain strategies that would help them prepare well for their exams. The most important among them, would be time management.

Students essentially need to create a separate timetable to study every day for the next 2 months before the board exam so as to plan, organise and study the subjects accordingly.

Here are some tips that could help student manage their time better, as suggested by Mr. Bhargava, the CEO of Mindler, a career counselling and an assessment company.

1. Plan the day well-

It is important for students to identify subjects and concepts which they find difficult. Revising them would help give them more significant insights and clarity about the subject which would help them fare better.

It is also advised that students keep a check on their strong areas or subjects. Revisiting the basics through examples and illustrations would also help them to understand the subject better.

2. Clear all related doubts-

It is important for students to make sure that their doubts are cleared by their teachers in advance to the revisional schedule. Students must also keep in constant touch with their teachers during their study holidays so that they can clear any doubt that might arise during that time.

3 Write mock exams-

Students must attempt solving mock test papers and previous years' sample question papers as it will not only help in providing the much-needed practice but will also acquaint them in learning about the different kind of questions that can be asked in an exam.

There are two key aspects that students must keep in mind before practising mock exams-

  • Replicate the exam-like environment: It's essential for students to attempt mock exams like they are attempting a real exam. Students need to be advised to take little or no breaks in between and also keep away from any distractions that would hinder their progress while writing the mock exam. Placing a timer that would replicate the board exam time would help train them to focus during these hours.

  • Don't overdo them: Writing a mock exam enables a student to systematically practice and identify concepts or areas that need more revision. However, it is not recommended that students go overboard by just solving mock papers. A student can attempt 2 mocks a day if they are done studying the syllabus or else, they can attempt one mock each day while learning a new chapter.

4. Pomodoro Technique

Students can set a timer of twenty-five minutes to help them focus on their studies and should take five minutes break before setting the timer to study again. Such small breaks in the middle help in relaxing and freshening the mind to learn more concepts without getting tired.

5. Revise-

Students need to prioritise the concepts they have read during revision. Revising those topics helps strengthen their understanding of the lesson. Visual aids can also be helpful while revising. Students are advised to condense their revision noted into one-page diagrams. This will help them recall everything they need to know during the exam.

6. Take care of yourself-

Students should not get exam pressure get to them. They need to sleep at least 6 a day and have nutritionally balanced meals. It is also recommended that they take regular breaks in-between their studies and their social lives to keep themselves happy and healthy.
